Professional services offered at IVAT include conducting child custody evaluations, psychological testing, forensic evaluations, writing reports to the court, conducting observations of interactions between involved parties, and conducting treatment of a variety of emotional and behavioral problems.  Additional direct services available through IVAT include:  individual, family, re-unification, and group therapy; supervised visitation; and parenting skills classes.  Therapy is provided to people with a variety of different problems in our comprehensive program.  All services are provided on a sliding fee scale.  Treatment providers at IVAT have a minimum of a Master’s degree in Clinical or Forensic Psychology and are working towards their doctorate degree or are a post-doctorate fellow.  In addition, all have been trained in assessment, child custody evaluations as well as in Intimate Partner Violence.

In forensic cases, the evaluator/expert witness/consultant does not advocate for a client. You are retaining a mental health professional. It shoudl be noted that the forensic evaluator/consultant/expert witness does not provide legal advice. You are encouraged to speak with a licensed attorney if you have legal questions.


The Forensic Team consists of a licensed psychologist, a post-doctorate fellow and 4-6 doctorate students, with Master’s Degrees in Clinical or Forensic Psychology, who are obtaining their Doctorate degrees at Alliant International University. They are under the supervision of Dr. Geffner at all times throughout the length of the case. Vitas/Resumes can be requested of any of the Forensic Team.

Q. What types of services do you offer?
A. IVAT has recently introduced an internship program and is now able to provide direct clinical services as well as forensic consultation work.  Professional services offered at IVAT include conducting child custody evaluations, psychological testing, forensic evaluations, writing reports to the court, conducting observations of interactions between involved parties, and conducting treatment and assessment of a variety of emotional and behavioral problems.  Additional direct services available through IVAT include:  individual, family, couple, re-unification, and group therapy; supervised visitation; and parenting skills.  Therapy is provided to people with a variety of different problems in our comprehensive program.  Treatment services are provided on a sliding fee scale based on income.

Q.    Who provides the services?
A.    Treatment providers at IVAT have a minimum of a Master’s degree in Clinical or Forensic Psychology and are working towards their doctorate degree or are a post-doctorate fellow.  In addition, all have been trained in assessment, child custody evaluations as well as in intimate partner violence.  The providers on the forensic team functions under the supervision of Robert Geffner, Ph.D., ABN, ABPP.   Bios are available upon request.

Q.    What is the cost of services?
A.    All clinical treatment including therapy, parenting skills sessions, and supervised visitations are offered on a sliding fee scale based on income.  IVAT’s sliding fee scale ranges from $25-$150 per session.  Evaluations conducted at IVAT cost $150 per hour and typically take approximately 7-10 hours to complete, including scoring of questionnaires and report writing.  Forensic consulting work costs $250 per hour.  Dr. Geffner or Dr. Venn can provide testimony and may be retained for a minimum of half a day (4 hours; $1000). 

Q.    How do I begin services?

A.            To begin any clinical or forensic service, contact the case manager at (858) 527-1860 X4560 to set up an intake appointment and to have forms sent to you.  At the intake appointment, regular sessions will be scheduled for services.  For supervised visitations, an intake appointment will need to be scheduled separately for both the mother and father of the child(ren).  To begin forensic consulting work with IVAT, an intake appointment is not necessary.  We require that you read and sign our informed consent agreement and send that back to us along with a deposit and records to review.
